I grew up in my grandmother's kitchen. From the time that I could drag a chair to the counter to "help", I had a love for cooking. It wasn't even about the food. It was about the process and the meal. My grandmother would just work seamlessly with me right under foot and let me have the leftover biscuit dough and any other scraps to do my own "cooking'. She could take a little of nothing, most of it coming from her garden, and put on the biggest spread you've ever seen. Everyone was welcome at her table. She never complained about the chore of preparing a meal. It seemed to be her way of showing her love.
I grew up and had children of my own. I started to see her more and more in myself. I then started to realize things that I was too young to appreciate before she passed away. How she was always the last to sit down, if she did at all. Those big spreads took a lot of planning and work. She made a little bit stretch a long way. If there was a serving that was less than perfect, it would be put aside on her plate. She ate a lot of burnt rolls in her life... I wished I would've paid more attention to the things she was trying to teach me and spent as much time helping to clean up the kitchen as I did making the mess.
I became a busy mom. I barely had time to plan meals, buy groceries, and cook. I wanted to give my children the same quality meal time I had growing up, but was hard. For years, I dreamed of starting a business where people could pickup REAL meals for their families to take home to their tables.
One day after serving a meal that I done regularly, I was asked if I would be willing to make pans to sell. What started as a take-home meal service quickly grew into event catering. Next thing I knew I was looking for a commercial kitchen space! In February 2017, we opened Southern Skillet Catering in a small rental space that we turned into :the little kitchen that could."
We now operate out of our very own 2000 sq ft brick & mortar commercial kitchen with a full separate stick burning smokehouse.
Hundreds of events and thousands of take-home meals later, Kyle (my business partner & soulmate) & I have build a business that we are very proud of. Our amazing crew has helped us build a reputation for who we are as a business and the impression we leave with our clients. This business has brought us so many great opportunities and relationships.
I thank God everyday that we get to do a job we love and that we get to be a small part of some really special memories.
I hope she can see that I learned a lot from those scraps...
